Canon Photo5 starts with five everyday items in a simple brown box.

with Jenn Cooper

This is unique photographic competition where each item offers a challenge designed to inspire the creation of remarkable photography. Canon Photo5 was an annual photography competition in Australia and New Zealand that challenged photographers to respond to five different photographic briefs, involving simple everyday objects. BFOP attendees who register receive a box containing five items, each acting as a prompt for a photo, and they must incorporate specific creative techniques into their shots. The competition aims to inspire creativity and push the boundaries of photographic expression all while having a lot of FUN!

The Core Concept:
The competition revolves around a “Photo5” concept, where participants receive a box containing five everyday objects.

The Briefs:
Each object serves as a photographic brief, requiring participants to create a unique image based on that object and a specific theme or technique.

Creative Techniques:
Participants are often instructed to incorporate specific creative photography techniques, like using light, shadows, or specific camera settings.

Community Engagement:
Canon encourages participants to share their work, fostering a sense of community among photographers and enthusiasts. Visit the Canon HQ and share your images to be printed and displayed on the Photo5 wall.

Prizes and Recognition:
Winners of the competition receive prizes such as Canon Selphy Printer, Canon merchandise and opportunities to showcase their work.

Past Examples:
In previous years, the briefs included items like spaghetti, tissue paper, little people, and even a brown box with a secret theme.

What will be in your Canon Photo5 box?
